Reading list The works this deck draws on, in the order worth reading them. Cards point to a specific chapter or paper where one fits.
01 Book The Happiness Trap · Russ Harris The clearest lay introduction to acceptance and commitment therapy: defusion, acceptance, values, and why fighting feelings backfires. The best single starting point for this deck. 02 Book Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy · David Burns The classic self-help account of cognitive therapy, with the list of cognitive distortions and the thought-record method. Reading it alone has measured benefit in trials of mild depression. 03 Book Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers · Robert Sapolsky The stress response explained from the physiology up, and why a system built for sprints does damage when run for years. Funny and exact. 04 Book Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself · Kristin Neff The three components, the research behind them, and the comparison with self-esteem, from the person who defined the construct. 05 Book Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle · Emily Nagoski and Amelia Nagoski The stressor versus the stress, and how to complete the cycle in the body. Chapter 1 carries most of the value. 06 Book The End of Trauma · George Bonanno Decades of longitudinal data showing that resilience is the common outcome after loss and trauma, and that flexibility rather than toughness is what predicts it. 07 Paper The Emerging Field of Emotion Regulation: An Integrative Review · James Gross, 1998 The process model in its original form; the source for reappraisal versus suppression and the five points of intervention. 08 Book How Emotions Are Made · Lisa Feldman Barrett A constructionist account of emotion that argues feelings are built from bodily signals and learned concepts rather than triggered as fixed programmes. The view is debated among researchers, but the chapters on emotional granularity are useful whichever side is right.
